Your Tax Return or Tax Account Transcript can be Ordered Online for Free
A transcript is acceptable as a substitute for a copy of a previously filed tax return in many situations.
The IRS offers two types of transcripts:
- Tax Return Transcript – shows most line items from a tax return as originally filed, including any accompnaying forms and schedules. It does not reflect any changes made after the return was filed, such as an amended return.
- Tax Account Transcript – shows any later adjustments either the taxpayer or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. It shows basic information – including marital status, type of return filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income.
The IRS does not charge a fee for these transcripts which are available for the current tax year and the past three tax years. These transcripts will be processed and mailed within 5 to 10 business days.

Taxpayers will need their Social Security Number or ITIN, date of birth, plus street address and ZIP code.
To have a transcript mailed to a different address than the one the IRS has on file, you must complete and mail Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.
